  • In a world so focused on exams and test scores, Moodys Mega Math (M3) Challenge reminds high schoolers that mathematics is more than just problem solving from a textbook. It shows students that math can actually be used to solve complex, real-world issues. An exclusively Internet-based contest, it is free of entry and participation fees, and open to high schools in the North Eastern U.S. from Maine through Florida. Eleventh and twelfth grade students have 14 hours to solve an open-ended, applied math-modeling problem focused on a worldly issue, and are judged based on their solution papers, followed by oral presentations by top teams. Students participating in past challenges have cracked everything from the effect of the stimulus package to using ethanol as biofuel. Sponsored by the Moodys Foundation and organized by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the Challenge takes place annually in March, and awards a total of $100,000 in scholarship prizes. The next Challenge weekend is set for March 5 and 6, 2011. Registration for the contest opens in November.
