A Message from the President

Dear Math Colleagues,

As President of the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics, I want to personally invite you to join us in strengthening and celebrating mathematics education across our state. Whether you are a veteran teacher, a new educator just starting on your journey, or a future teacher preparing to enter the classroom, you have an important place in our community.

GCTM has played a vital role in my 42-year teaching career. I first attended the Georgia Mathematics Conference in 1976 as a student at Berry College under the supervision of Dr. Robert Catanzano, and I was amazed at the connections available for professional growth.

GCTM strives to provide professional learning that can be immediately taken back into the classroom and implemented, while promoting an active interest in mathematics. This year, we are especially excited about several opportunities designed to connect, inspire, and equip Georgia’s math educators:

Georgia Math Conference – Our annual conference at Rock Eagle in October brings together passionate teachers from every corner of Georgia to share innovative practices, research-based strategies, and classroom-ready resources. It is a time to learn, grow, and return to your students with fresh ideas and renewed energy.

Summer Math Academies – These intensive workshops provide deep dives into content knowledge and pedagogy, offering hands-on experiences that strengthen teaching and learning at all grade levels.

Ongoing Professional Development & Networking – From the NCTM Annual Conference held in Atlanta in 2025 to awards recognizing outstanding educators to state math competitions for students, you’ll find opportunities throughout the year to collaborate with peers, build your professional network, and stay on the cutting edge of math education.

Your membership not only connects you with these opportunities, but it also ensures you have a voice in shaping the future of mathematics teaching in Georgia. Together, we can advocate for our profession, support one another, and most importantly, continue to inspire students to see the beauty and power of mathematics.

I encourage you to join us, attend our events, and become an active part of this vibrant community of educators. We are stronger together, and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming conference and academies.

With gratitude and excitement,

Don Slater

GCTM President 2024-2026

Participants enjoyed viewing the multiple ways of thinking when solving math problems! Teachers can't wait until June 28 to see who wins the raffle for a set of their very own wipebooks!

Participants at the 6th-8th Academy in Savannah, GA brainstormed about differentiation opportunities for daily math lessons that were visually shared through the wipebooks and explored big ideas with different approaches with great discourse. There will be one winner on Friday for a set of wipebooks! Good luck to participants!

Welcome from President Tammy Donalson

Fellow mathematics educators:

I am honored and excited to serve as your president for the next two years.

GCTM has played an important role in my career since 1987. I attended the Georgia Mathematics Conference in 1987 as a student under the supervision of Dr. Earl Swank and I was “hooked.” There are no words to describe how much GCTM has meant to me during my 31-year career.

GCTM strives to provide professional learning while promoting an active interest in mathematics. The professional learning can be taken back to the classrooms of Georgia educators and immediately implemented. We hope that mathematics educators share excitement every day in the classroom.

In addition to the Georgia Mathematics Conference, GCTM will be offering Summer Academies again this Summer. As Georgia roles out the new standards, GCTM is dedicated to providing support to Georgia’s educators.

We would love for you to be involved in GCTM----consider joining the organization, attending professional learning opportunities and feel free to reach out if you need support!!!

A Welcome Message

Fellow Mathematics Educators,

I hope you have had a successful beginning to this unprecedented year. I know I struggle daily wondering if I am enough for my students and some days if I will even make it. I do, however, feel a little more prepared as we begin the second semester. This organization (GCTM) has been a huge source of that comfort. I am, therefore, both honored and excited to be working with an amazing group of educators that share with me a common desire for others to learn the world of mathematics. I say “learn” because every time I am around one of you I learn something new. GCTM has given me engaging ideas to take back to my students, and it has helped me to understand concepts that just did not click. GCTM has also opened my eyes to the beauty of mathematics when oftentimes I just saw numbers, and most importantly supported me when I was ready to give up. GCTM is like a family and I enjoy adding new members to that tree. As a part of this family, I hope you will find ways to get involved. The relationships that you make and the opportunities available with GCTM will benefit you ten-fold. I know it has opened my eyes and my mind to so many possibilities in the ever changing world of mathematics education. There are so many ways you can influence these changes.

Many people think that GCTM is just about the annual mathematics conference, but WE ARE SO MUCH MORE! GCTM represents you throughout the year. Here are just a few:

NCTM Affiliate Leadership Conference

NCTM Annual Meeting & Expo in ATLANTA – September 22-25, 2021

GCTM Math Day at the Capitol

Virtual Roundtable Discussions

Book Study Groups

Georgia Mathematics Advisory Committee

Georgia Standards of Excellence Revision Committees

Georgia Equity Summit – You may want to check out the Georgia’s Mathematics Equity Toolkit at https://www.gadoe.org/Curriculum-Instruction-and-Assessment/Curriculum-and-Instruction/Documents/Mathematics/Mathematics-Equity-Toolkit.pdf

I hope you will find a way to be involved in some capacity. You may perhaps even have other ideas of ways GCTM can support teachers or promote mathematics education in Georgia. Either way, I look forward to working with you. I am just an email away. Please feel free to contact me or any member of the GCTM Executive Committee at any time. https://www.gctm.org/executive

Mathematically yours,

Kim Conley
President, GCTM
kim.conley@gctm.org

Date changed for Math Day at the Capitol

The Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCTM) will host "Math Day at the Capitol" on Monday, March 2, 2020. The event will provide an opportunity for legislators to hear the importance of a quality mathematics education and to meet math educators. The purpose of the day is to communicate with legislators the necessity of having quality mathematics education in order to support the development of mathematical literacy and proficiency required for success in careers and in competition in a global economy. Georgia’s economic growth will be enhanced by the preparedness of its students, particularly in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) areas.

A breakfast for the state legislators will be provided from 8:00-10:00 AM in room 220 of the State Capitol Building. If you are interested in attending this event, please let us know by emailing advocacy@gctm.org.
