Infusing the Classroom with Reasoning & Sense Making
An Interactive Institute on High School Mathematics
hosted by NCTM
Orlando, Florida
July 28-30, 2011

Now more than ever students need the right tools to succeed; still, many students lack the crucial reasoning and sense making skills necessary to apply mathematics to other contexts. NCTM’s Interactive Institute on High School Mathematics, Infusing the Classroom with Reasoning and Sense Making, is a new event designed to provide strategies for creating a high school math classroom in which students are engaged in reasoning and sense making. Learn everything you need to know right here and start planning now.

Space is limited so mark your calendars now for July 28-30, 2011 Registration opens in January.

Volunteer in Peru

Dear Potential Volunteers,

After a two year long service in the Peace Corps in Paraguay, I was hired by a social service organization working with the Hispanic community in Athens, GA. It was there I met my now friend, then co-worker, Giovanna Ayesta (a native Peruvian and a graduate of UGA's School of Social Work). In 2007 we organized a month-long stay in her hometown (Trujillo, Peru) for 15 volunteers.
Since then our non-profit organization, “Volunteer and Educational Network – Peru, Inc.” (V.E.N. – Peru) has taken dozens of volunteers to work in a variety of areas. The volunteer groups have consisted of public school teachers, university students, social workers, and others interested in bringing home what they learn from their experience to continue assisting those in need here at home.

Our idea is to connect interested Americans with volunteer positions in Peru as well as providing Spanish language instruction and a safe and secure place to stay. The volunteer posts are varied. Last summer's volunteer positions were held at a school for blind and disabled children, a medical clinic, an animal shelter, a boy's orphanage, and small, rural elementary school. We want to do our best to place each volunteer in a post that suits his/her interests and capabilities. Participants will live with host families where they receive 3 meals/day. They will work for approximately 3-5 hours/day (4-5 days/week), receiving transportation both to and from their volunteer posts. Also included are several hours/week of Spanish language instruction and the option of participating in various weekend excursions. The dates for this year’s program are June 3rd– July 2nd. Of course, there is then the option to stay, on your own, for independent travel.

To find out more information about the program please visit our website:  www.venperu.org

If you are unable to volunteer with us this summer but are still interested in assisting our efforts, please consider making a donation! Our volunteers work in schools, orphanages, medical clinics and animal shelters - all in great need of our support. All donations are tax deductible and checks (made out to VEN-Peru, Inc.) can be mailed to the address below.

Math Contest for Elementary Students

Dear Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics,

We would like to invite students from your state to Noetic Learning Math Contest!

Noetic Learning Math Contest is a problem solving contest for elementary students. The goal of the math contest is to develop young students' problem solving skills and foster their love and ambition for math. The next contest will be held on April 15th, 2010.

Each test consists of 20 problem solving questions. The problems that you’ll find in the contest are grade-appropriate.  No problems require special math concepts beyond what's learned at school.  However, many problems do require advanced problem solving skills.

Over 2,000 elementary students from the nation participated in our last contest in October 2009.  We’d like to invite your students to join us this spring!

You may find more information about the contest in the following invitation and more from our web site
